April is here, which means that spring is in full swing. And honestly, if you ask me — this is one of the prettiest months of the year. However, it also comes with a lot of responsibilities, especially if you are a gardener. To make everything a lot easier for you, we decided to share our ultimate April gardening checklist for the glam girl. From cleaning and planting to pool care and decor — we’ve included everything.

Making Sure Everything is Clean

Start your April gardening endeavors by tidying up your outdoor space and getting organized for the season ahead. Begin by clearing away any lingering debris, dead foliage, or anything else that you don’t want in your garden. Next, assess your gardening tools and equipment, giving them a thorough cleaning and sharpening as needed. Check for any signs of wear or damage, and replace or repair any items that are past their prime. It’s time to start fresh and take a look at what needs to be changed or tossed out!

Giving Your Soil a Little Bit of TLC

Once your outdoor space is clean and organized, turn your attention to your soil and give it a little bit of tender loving care. Begin by testing your soil’s pH levels to ensure it is within the optimal range for healthy plant growth. You can purchase a soil testing kit from your local garden center, or have your soil professionally tested for more accurate results. Based on your soil test results, amend your soil as needed to improve its structure, fertility, and drainage. Lastly, add a layer of mulch to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature throughout the growing season.

Planting Your Dream Garden

With your soil prepped and ready, it’s time to plant your dream garden and bring your outdoor oasis to life. Start by selecting a mix of flowers, vegetables, and herbs that thrive in your climate and suit your garden aesthetic. You could either start seeds indoors or purchase transplants from your local nursery to get a head start on the growing season. Both ways are more than okay, but if you’re a newbie in the gardening world, I would definitely advise you to go for transplants.

Getting Your Pool Ready

As the temperatures rise and the days grow warmer, it’s time to prepare your pool for a new season too. So, if you live in a warmer climate, April is the perfect month to do that. Start by giving your pool a thorough cleaning, and removing any debris, leaves, or algae that may have accumulated over the winter months. Use a pool skimmer, brush, and vacuum to clean the pool surface, walls, and floor, and be sure to check and clean your pool filter and pump system as well. Once your pool is clean and clear, test the water chemistry and adjust the pH, alkalinity, and chlorine levels as needed to ensure everything is safe and sanitary.

Adding Spring Decor

Last but not least, add a little bit of ambiance to your outdoor space as well. And what better way to do that than with decor? From new or refurbished outdoor furniture, cushions, new outdoor lighting or throw pillows — it’s these little things that can make the biggest impact. You can also add pops of color and texture with seasonal accessories such as outdoor rugs, planters, and garden art. Or maybe hang string lights or lanterns to create ambiance and extend the time that you can spend relaxing in your garden.
