What Are Adaptogen Supplements and How They Can Improve Your Health

If I can be frank about it, I’m not too big on supplements. I believe that it can be so misleading and borderline dangerous to take them without consulting a doctor first. However, that doesn’t mean that all of them should be avoided. For example, I do love taking adaptogen supplements. These are just herbal remedies in a concentrated form that can (scientifically proven) improve your overall well-being in so many ways. So, let’s learn a bit more about them.

What Are Adaptogens, Anyway?

Of course, we’ll have to start with the basics and explain what adaptogens are in the first place. Adaptogens are a group of herbs and mushrooms that have been used for centuries in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. And just as the name implies, they can help the body adapt to stress, support adrenal health, and promote the overall balance of your body.

The way that adaptogens work is that they help regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathoadrenal system. That way they modulate the production of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. This, in turn, can help reduce stress, increase energy levels, and enhance overall resilience.

What Adaptogen to Choose?

Now that you know the basics, it’s time to talk about the options that you have. And lucky for you, there are plenty of them. I’ll go over some of the most popular ones, and what they could add to your wellness routine.

Ashwagandha

Known as the “Indian ginseng,” ashwagandha is a true powerhouse when it comes to stress reduction and adrenal support. This adaptogen has been used for centuries to promote relaxation, enhance mental clarity, and support overall vitality. It can also be a great addition to your workout routine, as it helps boost your athletic performance.

Panax Ginseng

If you need a natural energy boost, look no further than Panax ginseng. This potent adaptogen has been shown to increase stamina, improve cognitive function, and boost your immune system. I loved taking ginseng while I was attending university, as it would help with my focus and midday slumps. Aim for a daily dose of 200–400 mg of standardized extract.

Goji Berry

Bursting with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, goji berries are nature’s gift to your immune system. These vibrant red berries have been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to support immune function, promote longevity, and enhance vitality. Enjoy them dried, fresh, or in supplement form.

Turmeric

This golden spice isn’t just for adding flavor to your favorite dishes – it’s also a powerful adaptogen with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Turmeric has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to support joint health, promote digestive wellness, and boost overall immunity. Aim for a daily dose of 500–2,000 mg of standardized extract or enjoy it in culinary dishes.

How Can I Incorporate Adaptogens Into My Routine?

Last but not least, let’s talk about incorporating adaptogen supplements into your routine. Believe me when I tell you that there’s nothing easier than that. You can find adaptogen supplements in various forms, including capsules, powders, tinctures, and teas. Personally, I feel like the easiest way for me to add them to my routine is by using regular capsules. But my genuine advice would be to experiment with different adaptogens and formulations to find what works best for you. Remember, one size does not fit all. So, don’t be afraid to get creative with how you incorporate them into your favorite recipes and beverages.
